ARP Ping Tool Description - Last Review: August 12, 2009

The ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) Ping tool uses ARP packets to 'ping' an IPv4 device on your LAN (subnet or network segment) and looks for ARP responses from the device. IPv4 devices must respond to ARP packets even if the device uses firewalls or other stealthy methods to hide from ICMP or UDP based ping tools. NetScanTools Pro also includes a Ping Tool and a Ping Sweep Scanner capable of pinging a range of IP addresses using ICMP packets.

If you are looking for a way of finding all active IPv4 devices in a local network segment even if they are using device level firewalls (or personal firewalls), please see the ARP tool and look at the ARP scan function.
