How to move a Hyper-V virtual machine without exporting it first on windows 10

Remark: It is not official method, it just a workaround when you have those VM on hand but you did not exporting it before

(Warning: Make sure the new host did not have any VM, the following method will remove all of them)

1. Stop the Hyper-V Service

2. Copy all files under "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks" to the same location of the new Windows 10 machine

3. Copy all files under "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V" to the same location of the new Windows 10 machine

4. Run the PowerShell to change the permission of those VM (If you miss this step, you will receive a error (Fig.1))

image

5. Start the hyper-V service

6. Done (You will able to power on those VM on the new host)

The error message of missing the steps 4

image

Fig. 1 - The error message when you try to power on the machine without grant the permission

If you receive a error message (Ethernet Port....) like the following when you power on a VM:

image

It should be the Virtual Switch configuration is different between the old host and the new host, change the virtual switch selection on the VM will fix the problem.

Change to the new host configuration:

If you hit the issue on WMP EHCT801 WiFi not stable (Always disconnected suddenly and randomly) after upgrade to Windows 10 (1703) Creators Update. You need to check your Wireless card driver version.

CloudReady based on Google Chromium OS and also free for home use

One of the requirement to running CloudReady is your machine support UEFI boot, since the IBM X61 did not support UEFI boot, so I install Lubuntu on it.

For the CloudReady, I use the Lenovo X200 which is able to install the CloudReady.

Setup

Not sure because I running this tools on Windows 10 insider preview, the auto discovery did not work. I add the storage to the manager manually (by entering the IP address)

image

Since I am using the old drive, I need to clean those disk before I able to use it on the NAS

Cleaning a Hard Disk Using Windows diskpart

Using diskpart blanks the disk without putting down a write signature or partition table. This avoids potential hard drive failures resulting from disk format issues. For example, if a hard disk with a capacity larger than 2TB is formatted under Windows XP, it could fail after installation in a NAS device due to the msdos partition table.

  1. Mount the hard disk in a drive carrier and connect it to a SATA connector on a Windows-based computer.
  2. Open a command prompt and type diskpart.
  3. Type list disk to verify that the disk is recognized.

NOTE: diskpart lists hard disks by number where "0" is the OS disk. You can use Windows Disk Management to verify the number of the disk you want to clean.

  1. Type select disk #, where # identifies the disk you want to clean. For example, if you are cleaning disk 1, type select disk 1.

CAUTION! Cleaning a hard disk with diskpart will completely destroy all data on the disk. Do NOT proceed unless you are certain you have selected the correct disk!

  1. Type clean.

Once the disk is cleaned, it is ready to install in your ix or px network storage device.

After clean disk still not work. It seems that I mixed two different size hdd cause the issue or firmware too old..

Try to put into 1 drive only

I finally make it and upgrade to the latest firmware via web browser
