Problem: Google drive desktop shortcut icon become blank after upgrade to Windows 8.1
Solution: Delete the blank icon on desktop and go to “Favorites”, select “Google Drive”, right click and select “Send to” –> Desktop (create shortcut)

This was helpful, thanks! A caveat: I clicked the Windows button to do a search for Favorites, but when I clicked on the buttons available, I got error messages, even when I clicked in the left sidebar. For some reason, only when I clicked the folder button on the taskbar tray and THEN looked to the left sidebar, clicking the Favorites button worked as you described.
